Questions we discussed
Q1 How did you become a digital marketer? Please share your career story!
I was laid off from my job and I started an in-home wine tasting business and used social media to promote my business.
While I was doing that I decided I wanted to create fun tutorials on how to use social media.
So I used one of my improv comedy characters to start a blog as Grandma Mary Social Media Edutainer and that led to the book deal.
I am the co-author of Facebook Marketing All-in-One for Dummies along with @amyporterfield and @phylliskhare
And now I get to speak and train all over the world as well as consult businesses about Facebook Marketing and Facebook Advertising!
Q2 How should small businesses start using Facebook to reach their customers?
I’m a big believer in using Facebook ads strategically as organic reach has been decreasing
But you don’t have to spend a lot of money on ads. Focus on moving people to your list or to your website and use retargeting later.
Facebook video is still crushing it and can be great to get some organic reach as well as build a retargeting audience. Small businesses can also use Facebook Stories or Facebook Groups to get a little more visibility.
A2: The easiest (and most under-utilized) opportunity is to install the FB Pixel on their site. Just see how much of your audience is there already — it costs you nothing and takes about 5 minutes to set up the base implementation with GTM. #VCBuzz

Yes and no – organic reach is still there but definitely VERY low. Video helps. #vcbuzz

Q3 Which mistakes do you often see small businesses make when it comes to Facebook marketing and how to fix them?
Facebook Marketing Mistake #1 – ONLY using the Boost Post option.
Boosting your posts is easy – Facebook is always suggesting it. But when the ad is optimized around your true goal it will typically do MUCH better.
A3: I have a helpful post around creating a better Facebook Ads strategy: https://t.co/DAq6TSPGHP #vcbuzz

Facebook Marketing Mistake #2 – Not Targeting and Testing your ads properly.
I just recently was able to cut a client’s advertising costs in HALF by systematically testing new audiences and images.
A3: (i) Audience targeting is too narrow or too broad (both are bad, but for different reasons); (ii) too little investment in brilliant creative and (iii) a set-it-and-forget-it mindset. It’s a surefire recipe to waste money. #vcbuzz

Facebook Marketing Mistake #3 – Not using the Facebook Pixel correctly or at all.
The pixel will track your sales and leads from Facebook and Instagram and if you aren’t using it, you are missing out on the BEST part of the ads interface.
You can not only track Facebook Leads and Sales but also retarget your ads and create better audiences to use with the pixel.
Easy money for them and easiest for beginners. #vcbuzz https://t.co/boM0WfIyaG

I think they are just trying to get them to get started in the easiest way – but it’s not great.
it is easy but it just throwing money away! I’d assume they’d get more engaged advertisers if they pushed more effective tactics instead! #vcbuzz

A3) #vcbuzz Targeting is too broad. Campaigns that are not geared towards individuals. To fix this, define ideal customers very specifically – at their interest level & create campaigns with ads geared towards those individuals & interests. It creates a conversation not a pitch.

Q4 Is there still organic visibility for small businesses on Facebook? How can small businesses save on Facebook marketing?
Yes it is still available. I have a local client doing extremely well with videos. Both live in the store and uploaded.
Plus hardly any businesses are using Facebook Stories. That can be a way to stand out with something different.
Small businesses can save on advertising costs by using retargeting – it sometimes only costs $10 to reach your warm audience
You are never going to get 100% of your followers seeing your posts even with an ad. Try a Reach Ad (although not as good for traffic) to push it further #vcbuzz
— AndreaVahl (@AndreaVahl) January 21, 2020
Yes, I think something like a Reach ad, video ad, or Boosted post is a really good thing from time to time to optimize in different ways for visibility. #vcbuzz

A4: Video ads can help a small business tell their story and gain awareness. Here’s a older post but still has a lot of good tips: https://t.co/giRmIX2Ckm #vcbuzz

Facebook Stories could be a good way to promote last minute appointments at a discount or short-term discount codes for #local businesses. #vcbuzz https://t.co/Pn1sK1v8pP
