Questions we discussed
Q1 How did you become a content marketer? What’s your definition of content marketing?
I started as an SEO 13 years ago and evolved into a content marketer. I’ve always leverage content (linkbait, infographic, ebooks, etc) for marketing purposes. To me that’s what content marketing is.
I like to think of it as “I’ve been doing content marketing before it was cool” ?
A1 I had started doing content marketing before it was called inbound marketing ? #vcbuzz

Before content marketing it was inbound marketing, blogging & SEO.
Q2 How does ContentMarketer.io work and how did you come up with the idea of it?
I used to run an SEO agency and over the years we’ve hunted down & sent over 1 million emails to promote content or build links. After doing it manually for so long I got smart and built a few tools to help automate and scale.
ContentMarketer.io is an email finder + outreach tool. Use it for link building, influencer marketer & content promotion. I learned a lot about the outreach process.
@manifestcon Keep your message short and make it all about the value to the receiver #vcbuzz

Most important lesson I learned was to get on someones radar on social media before reaching out.
ContentMarketer.io is $19/month but we have a free outreach tool called Notifier. Notifier let’s do tweet at people or brands included in your content
Q3 What’s the best way to notify an influencer or a brand that you have featured them in your article? Do you have some templates or tips?
Notify them on the channel their most active. I use Twitter, email & Facebook in that order.
ContentMarketer.io has a few dozen templates. Be short (2-3 sen), clear CTA, & don’t ask for shares… ask for feedback.
Yes! Show you care before asking something of them. Wins their heart with interest! #vcbuzz https://t.co/659uVUYBnJ

Be personable as well. For example: My email signature is “Hugs & Kisses, Sujan Patel” You’re going to remember that ? People respond to my emails simply because of my signature ?
that’s why I asked! RT @trinalschneider “cheers” only works if you are from Australia/England, or about to enter a 12-step program #vcbuzz

Q4 What other efficient content marketing tactics can you recommend?
Collect emails early and fast. Use tools like @hellobar or @sumome Send an email every time you publish. Build a big enough email list and that’s all you’ll need to do to promote your content.
Be smart about what you write. Do keyword research using @SEMrush & @Buzzsumo evergreen traffic and write about popular topics
@briandean only has ~30 articles and receives a few hundred thousand visitors a month. Quality over quantity!!
Use Notifier and tweet at the people you mentioned. Easy win and takes less than a minute.
Don’t skimp on content promotion. Use any of these ways. It’s not always efficient but it’s ALWAYS effective.
A4 My favorite tactic is content re-packaging https://t.co/Ncg7FZJ5mi #vcbuzz
— Ann Smarty (@seosmarty) December 22, 2015
I setup alerts on @Mention & @BuzzSumo I get emails daily about every time my content is linked to or mentioned. I found Buzzsumo is great for links and Mention works well for social shares (tweets & linkedin)
Q5 What are your favorite content marketing productivity tools?
I just wrote a post of my favorite tools here.
